Author: Ando Yoko / Photographer: Kawashima Katsumi
This book is a collection of photographs of white cats taken at 17 facilities and stores in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture.
This white cat is an object created by artist Ando Yoko for her installation art series "Collaboration with 100 Cats," made to be almost the same size as a real cat. There are nearly 150 of them in total, and they are made from ultra-lightweight paper clay. Ando Yoko called the group of cats she created the "Actor Cats of the 100 Cat Troupe," and she herself was the leader of the troupe and developed her artistic career. The artist passed away in 2024, leaving behind the "100 Cat Troupe."
Photographer Kawashima Masaru takes the cats to various places in Sakai, where the artist lived for many years, capturing the moments when the photographer's sensibilities and the artist's sensibilities synchronize.
As readers turn the pages of this book, they may find themselves under the illusion that the white papier-mâché cat sculpture has become a real cat, projecting their own experiences and memories onto it. Children may even start telling stories while looking at this book. While the book does not have a story like a picture book, we have decided to call it a photo picture book collection, with the hope that each reader will find it to unfold in a similar way to a picture book.
At the end of the book, we have a small space introducing the facilities and businesses that cooperated with the shoot.
