■35 years of digital astronomical imaging
Cooled cameras for astronomical photography have now moved from the CCD era to an era where CMOS is the mainstream. SLR cameras have also shifted from mirrorless to mirrorless. There are many other changes in specifications and imaging that can be understood anew by looking at them over time. In this two-part series, we will explain the evolution of digital astronomical imaging over the past 35 years, including the early days from around 1990. In the first part, we will explain the changes in camera specifications from the dawn of digital cameras to 2025.
