Author: Sunao Sato
If we were to liken the threads tracing Soseki's works to a spider's web, they could be divided into two main systems: the warp threads, which are the disciples and influenced writers centered around Soseki, and the weft threads, which are related writers such as Soseki's contemporaries. Previous Soseki research seems to have focused mainly on these warp threads.
Recently, it has become clear that works by authors such as Koda Rohan and Higuchi Ichiyo, who were previously thought to have no direct connection to Soseki's novels, significantly influenced Soseki, serving as these "weft threads."
In Terada Torahiko's essay "Science and Literature," he writes, "Almost all aspects of literature can be seen as experiments, each in a different form." Please consider this book also as a thought experiment. (From the author's afterword)
