Edited by: Shingo Hidaka and Koji Kato Supervised by: National Museum of Ethnology and Musashino Art University Museum & Library
Folk tools are objects that were made and used as necessities in daily life, and they allow us to experience the knowledge and skills of making the most of familiar materials, as well as the views of nature and the world that people have developed. Folk tools are also collected by researchers as they travel and encounter the lifestyles and cultures of various regions, and are developed into museum collections.
This book introduces a selection of folk tools from around the world that were collected for the 1970 Osaka World Expo (Expo' 70), as well as from Japanese folk tools collected nationwide at Musashino Art University, focusing on the diversity of Japanese culture during the same period.
We invite you to "discover" the charm of traditional Japanese and international folk tools from a variety of perspectives, "gazing" at each one and searching for the source of wisdom they hold.
