This illustrated book is about the Chaetoceridae family of Japan, which is said to be the most diverse and numerous marine planktonic diatom. Its main feature is that the morphology and genetic analysis results of the Chaetoceridae family can be checked using QR codes, making it a valuable resource that can be linked and referenced.
The illustrated book consists of three chapters, and Chapter 1 covers the basics of diatoms, their taxonomic position, life history, how to classify resting spores, and classification points for vegetative cells.
Chapter 2 includes (1) a search table for searching by photograph and a general search table, (2) the main illustrations, which incorporate numerous light and scanning electron microscope images of the 68 species listed, and include images of the surface structure of setae and resting spores, which are characteristic of this family. It also includes (3) a method for typing species that are difficult to morphologically classify based on vegetative cells alone. In addition to the various illustrations, the book also includes (4) a table summarizing SEM images of the surface structure of setae (63 species), (5) a table summarizing images of resting spores (28 species), and (6) a phylogenetic tree (two species: 18S and 28S) that compiles the results of genetic analysis and its discussion.
Chapter 3 covers research methods for marine diatom research, analytical methods, tips for viewing them under an optical microscope, methods for electron microscope observation, isolation and culture, and resting spore formation, making the book a useful reference for the cultivation of microalgae.
