■ From "Hayabusa" to "Hayabusa2," and then to "Hayabusa2#" [Part 1]
From "Hayabusa," which pioneered a new era of asteroid exploration, to "Hayabusa2," and beyond. Coinciding with "Hayabusa2"'s planned flyby of asteroid Trifune on July 5, 2026, this magazine will present a special three-part series. We will look back at the history of Japan's asteroid exploration.
The first installment focuses on the original "Hayabusa." We explain its trajectory, from challenging the world's first sample return to overcoming numerous troubles and returning to Earth, along with the technical background.
■ Photographing Red Nebulae with the OM SYSTEM OM-3 ASTRO Dedicated Astronomical Camera
The "OM SYSTEM OM-3 ASTRO" is an astronomical camera optimized for Hα transmission. This camera is designed to reproduce the red coloration of hydrogen gas, which tends to be faint with ordinary digital cameras, more richly and naturally. In this article, we take full advantage of this characteristic to photograph nebulae with a telephoto lens. We verify its capability to render the details of faint, expansive gas while maintaining sharp star images thanks to its high-resolution sensor.
The examples are provided by astrophotographer Shigemi Numazawa. We will thoroughly introduce the expressive power and potential of the OM-3 ASTRO, as revealed through actual shooting, along with key shooting tips.
