While digital production is now mainstream, the appeal of analogue-style book illustrations is once again attracting attention. Book illustrations are the first point of contact between readers and a story, and a crucial element that symbolizes the work's worldview. Analogue expressions, such as the texture of paper and the blurring and fading of paint, carry the traces of the artist's hand, creating a unique image.
The creation of book illustrations involves multiple stakeholders, including illustrators, book designers, and editors, whose perspectives overlap. This special feature attempts to capture the current state of book illustration as an art form from these three perspectives.
Interviews with illustrators introduce their creative backgrounds, thoughts, and drawing techniques. Furthermore, through the practice of book designer Akiko Okubo, we explore the concept of bookbinding that brings book illustrations to life. Interviews with book editors delve into the illustration selection process and the reality of their relationship with illustrators.
We hope this special feature will provide an opportunity to re-examine the depth and potential of the field of book illustration.
