Author: Shiotsu Botanical Research Institute

A seed tree is a plant before it is grown into bonsai. Authors Takehiro and Kumiko Shiotsu run the Shiotsu Botanical Research Institute, a "seed tree shop" in Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture. The institute uses a variety of horticultural techniques, including seedlings, cuttings, and layering, to consistently produce bonsai from seed trees to finished bonsai. This book introduces over 200 types and 300 species of plants, focusing on familiar plants such as cherry blossoms, zelkova, ginkgo, and pine, which are sure to be encountered in everyday life. It also includes essential bonsai tools such as watering cans and pruning shears, carefully selected pots, and bases and mountain moss that enhance the beauty of bonsai. While providing basic plant knowledge, the book also aims to encourage the enjoyment of bonsai, often associated with formality, in a modern and casual way by proposing a lifestyle with bonsai through familiar flowers, plants, pots, and containers.

This book is a compilation and expansion of the popular series "Plant Breeding" from the magazine "Florist." It is part of Seibundo Shinkosha's "365 Days of Calendar" series.

Released 25/06/11
