This book covers everything from basic knowledge such as the history, origins and types of Tsugaru Kogin embroidery to how to actually embroider it, including materials and tools, preparation and basic stitching techniques.
The book is structured to deepen your knowledge of Kogin embroidery from many angles, including its connection to the Mingei movement, interviews with people who preserve and pass on the traditions of Kogin embroidery, Modoko designs, and its relationship with Nanbu diamond embroidery.
This expanded and revised edition includes 10 new older works, new interview articles, and a revised timeline.

Among the sashiko traditions of the Tohoku region, the most famous is "Tsugaru Kogin embroidery" from Aomori Prefecture.
It began as a method of embroidering linen cloth, which was filled with linen thread to provide warmth and reinforcement. Women who recognized the beauty of the patterns added their own unique evolution to the designs, and before long, a variety of patterns had developed.
While Japanese handicrafts are being reevaluated, many of the excellent books that provide detailed information about the historical background of Kogin embroidery and the designs and techniques that have been passed down since ancient times are now almost out of print and difficult to obtain, making it difficult to find information about Kogin embroidery.
This book conveys the charm of handcrafts to people of all ages, and also contains all the charm, strength, warmth and advanced techniques of beautiful sashiko, born in the harsh climate of the northern regions, making it the definitive guide for a wide range of age groups.

*This book is an expanded and revised version of "Tsugaru Kogin Embroidery Techniques and Designs Collection," published in September 2013, which includes new older works and interview articles, and has been updated with the latest information.

Released 25/12/22
