A special issue compiling the work of web designer/graphic designer Ryoji Tanaka over the past 20 years.
In the early 2000s, as online media that allowed people to interact with each other via the Internet became a part of our daily lives, Tanaka began his career as a web designer, creating a wide variety of designs using computers and technology.
Tanaka and his company Semitransparent Design are active in a wide range of fields, and some people recognize him as a graphic designer, while others consider him a web designer or media artist. This is probably because Tanaka has developed his work without being bound by medium or presentation format.
Although there is no flashiness or strict style that visually connects these works, there is a basis for the design that gives a sense of Tanaka's presence somewhere in the work, as if each work is the solution of a common equation. The keyword that creates this basis is "time axis." And the time axis that Tanaka is conscious of can also be rephrased as "context."
In this special feature, the diverse works that Tanaka Ryoji has created are categorized by their format, including graphic design, web design, installation art, and exhibition planning, and are arranged in chronological order by category. The works included were selected by Tanaka himself. By arranging the works in parallel on each piece of paper and interspersing them with text related to Tanaka's creations, the aim is to connect Tanaka's past and present work, creating a single belt that transcends categories, and to create the "design with a time axis" that Tanaka has been aiming for.
