Author: Carpenter's Tool Research Group

This book brings together information on how to find the right paint for each wood species, taking advantage of the wood's natural texture, and the painting methods involved.

In Japan, many wooden products are manufactured to take advantage of the natural texture of the wood. Furniture and interior materials, in particular, are so familiar with the texture of wood that even if they are made from plywood, they are often printed with wood grain.
Many commercially available paints for wood products are transparent and allow the wood grain to show through. When painting wood, you can of course use commercially available paints, but you can also choose to use natural oils. In this case, understanding the compatibility between wood and oil, the drawbacks of oil paint, and the benefits of adding chemicals and pigments to improve the paint's performance will help expand the range of paints that use natural oils.

This book examines the benefits of oil painting and the potential drawbacks inherent in wood through test applications, and introduces essential knowledge for oil painting. It is known that oil paints emit small amounts of formaldehyde, which can be harmful to the human body, during the drying process. However, by properly understanding these drawbacks, you can paint safely and find a paint that is suited to the wood species while enhancing the oil's performance. This book introduces the characteristics of wood, painting tools, and types of oil, and explains the drawbacks and benefits of oil painting through actual painting. It also introduces painting techniques to achieve the ideal oil finish. Furthermore, we interview a professional woodworker who specializes in natural paints about his thoughts and practices on oil painting, taking into account customer complaints.
