Japan is considered a country with few underground resources, but there used to be mines all over the country, and underground resources such as gold and copper were actively mined. There were about 5,000 mines in the country, but they were closed in the Showa era when their mission was fulfilled. The remains of the mines are recognized as heritage sites with cultural, industrial, or geoscientific value, and are attracting attention. In particular, Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine and Hashino Iron Mine have been registered as World Heritage Sites, and in 2024, Sado Gold Mine will also be registered as a World Heritage Site.
This book introduces 31 abandoned mines in Japan, with basic information such as their location, minerals produced, and heritage status, as well as an overview of the mines, the state of their mineral deposits, and the current state of their remains, all accompanied by photographs.
This book will appeal not only to people who like mines, but also to people who like rocks and minerals, and people who are interested in ruins. Why not take this book with you and enjoy a tour of the mines?
