Exploring new possibilities in fashion and graphic design
Special Feature: Binding The Ecology of Fashion Design
Many fashion designers conduct extensive research when creating a collection, and then organize the fragmented thoughts they gain from that research into a flat space called a "mood board."
In order to visualize the creative process of these fashion designers, this special feature will introduce the creative process of Yoshikazu Yamagata, designer of the fashion brand "writtenafterwards," as well as objects and memories related to Yamagata's personal history, while also linking them to social phenomena.
As you browse the pages of the magazine, which begins with mythology and spans ancient, medieval, early modern, and modern times, all the way up to the present day, you may find some things that cannot be captured by a narrow view of fashion.
However, this special feature, which crosses Eastern and Western cultures and tells the history of fashion through Yamagata's creations, should give readers a sense of the evolution of clothing that has run parallel to humanity and its ecosystem.
By tracing this evolution, we will explore the similarities and differences in the thinking behind fashion design and graphic design, and examine new possibilities for both.
While we were producing this special feature, the COVID-19 pandemic occurred on a global scale, forcing us to fundamentally reexamine our economic activities and daily lives.
Now that freedom of movement and interaction has been taken away, we are seeing changes in the way people dress. Through Yamagata's attempt to consider fashion and clothing within the grand history and activities of humanity, we may be able to realize how irreplaceable culture and expressive activities are to us in a broader sense.
