It's fine to use plants as they are, but depending on how you process them, you can increase the range of uses for plants and the variety of works you can create.

Some people may be fascinated by baskets made from Akebia or wild grapes and have tried weaving them themselves, or may have taken up the hobby of weaving baskets from natural materials.
It's fine to weave baskets or strainers using plant materials as they are after they've been collected, but by taking the extra step of peeling and splitting them, you can extract a variety of fibers from a single plant, broadening the scope of your creative expression. However, beginners may not know where the plants they want to use are growing, and even experienced people may not know how to extract the fibers.
This book introduces 57 species of plants that can be used for basket weaving, including Pleurotus veitchii, Ramie sieboldii, Akebia trifoliata, and Walnut, and provides instructions on how to make baskets, bags, miscellaneous goods, etc. It also suggests preparatory and processing methods (splitting branches and culms, removing outer and inner bark, tearing leaves, rope-free weaving, etc.), and also covers the work of workshops on Iriomote Island and artisans of Itaya crafts in Kakunodate, as well as plants that are characteristic of the region.
