We interviewed active graphic designers who teach at art universities and other institutions to get to know the cutting edge of design education!

This special feature focuses on private design communities that serve as a learning environment for individual designers, and asks how design education is reflecting and updating the current social situation, roughly 10 years after our magazine's 2013 special feature "Special Lectures on Design" (Issue 359), which looked back on design education in Japan since the end of the war.

Entering the 2010s, the word "design" has become familiar in fields other than visual arts, such as information business and technology research, as a medium for connecting things and events that at first glance seem to have nothing in common and sparking interactions, or as a word suggesting cross-disciplinary perspectives and thinking.
On the other hand, in a society where the conceptualized word "design" has taken on a life of its own and is overused as if it were a magic word, the value of design as an industry and of designers as design professionals is changing into something different from what it was before.

In response to this social situation, over the past decade art universities and design colleges across Japan have continued to open new design departments and courses, raising hopes that this will change the image of the designer in design education and lead to new discussions about the essence of design.
Therefore, in this special feature, we decided to interview designers currently active in the field of design education and visit their classrooms. In the second half, we will focus on the situation of design education and educational institutions overseas, mainly in Asian countries, as well as the people who support open design education, such as design events, workshops, and educational media.
